Year of Prayer

2023 Year of Prayer

We have designated 2023 as the Year of Prayer for St Brendan Parish. On this page you will find helpful resources, parish events and information regarding prayer and the important role it plays in each of our lives. As Catholics, we recognize that prayer is of the utmost importance, an invaluable contribution to helping others and ourselves to grow in faith and support our parish family. It guides our actions, it binds us in solidarity to one another and connects us more deeply with the grace that flows from God

Have a suggestion? Email jrice@stbrendans.net to grow our list!

Holy Moments – Matthew Kelly – Short, practical read for anyone who is looking for more meaning, how to tune in to God’s voice and be open to His will for us.

A Biblical Walk through the Mass –  Edward Sri – Dr. Sri explains the Mass.in great detail  and in an easy to understand way. He explains the meaning behind the words, gestures and rituals and also how the Mass transcends time and space to make present to us the life, death and resurrection of Christ. And of course he gives us the Biblical roots of it all. I have read it 3 times and am sure I will read it again. I recommend it because it will change the way you worship! – Glenna

This Present Paradise – Claire Dwyer – The author’s personal reflections alongside the writings and biography of St. Elizabeth of the Trinity bring this saint to life and relevant to our daily spiritual life. Short chapters with reflection questions at the end of each one.

Rescued: The Unexpected and Extraordinary News of the Gospel – Fr. John Riccardo – All of the content of the Rescue Project in writing! Meet Jesus as you have not before, the warrior who fought for us and who asks us to fight for others.

Left to Tell – Immaculée Ilibagiza – An autobiography from the Rwandan genocide (definitely a heavier read) about how one extraordinary young woman found the courage to forgive the men who murdered her entire family through the rosary, scripture, and prayer. An amazing read, especially for anyone whose life has been touched by fear, suffering, or loss.

The Story of a Soul – St Therese of Lisieux- This book details Therese’s short, yet impactful life and journey into the convent. It gives an in-depth look into her Little Way Spirituality and writes in a way that is both accessible to the new convert and rich for the seasoned Catholic!

Be Healed – Bob Schuchts – A book centered around spiritual, emotional, and physical healing. Dr Schuchts pulls from his extensive knowledge of Catholic therapy to address how to heal emotional wounds from lies or inner vows. I loved how simple and straightforward this book was in practical application!

The Spiritual Gifts Handbook – Randy Clark and Mary Healy – Dr. Mary Healy, a Catholic scholar, and Randy Clark,  founder of a healing ministry, team up to discuss the charismatic gifts of the spirit. They use personal experience as well as drawing on Scripture and tradition. I thought this was a great way to introduce charismatic spirituality in the Catholic context!

We recognize the heartache when our loved ones have drifted away from their faith.  St. Monica knew this pain so well and is a model for us to persevere in prayer for those we desire to return.

Dear St. Monica,

Troubled wife and mother, many sorrows pierced your heart during your lifetime. Yet you never despaired or lost faith. With confidence, persistence and profound faith, you prayed daily for the conversion of your beloved husband, Patricius, and your beloved son, Augustine. Grant me that same fortitude, patience and trust in the Lord. Intercede for me, dear St. Monica, for (mention your petition here) and grant me the grace to accept his will in all things, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

SAINT MONICA – Your prayers, pilgrimages, fasts and words were fruitful, but only after many tears. Help us to be as concerned as you for the immortal souls of those close to us. ST. MONICA, PRAY FOR US.

“And remember: you and I alone cannot open people’s hearts. Only the Holy Spirit can open people’s hearts. God loves the people for whom we pray, even more than we do. We may not see results today or tomorrow, or even in our lifetimes. But seeing results isn’t up to us. Praying with trust and perseverance, as St Monica did, is up to us. The rest is in the hands of God. And there is no better or safer place to be than in the hands of the God who is love.” ~ Fr Joseph Marcello

I am supplementing my prayer request for Pastor Hutch Hubschman who has been in a battle against pancreatic cancer since his diagnosis in March of 2022. On May 4th, Hutch was greeted by Jesus who welcomed him home. Please join in praying for Hutch's spouse Peggy of more than 35 years, his mother, his siblings, children, grandchildren, his church in Mt. Gilead Bryn Zion where he was a Baptist Minister, and all who knew and loved him. Thank you.
