Service Ideas

November and December can be a great time for a class service project. There are many projects you can do in class that are fun and easy to do. It also offers a chance to discuss with our classes ways in which we can share God’s love with others. Here are ideas catechists have done in the past that we would recommend:

1.) Write a Letter or Draw a Picture for U.S. Troops Over Seas:
Coloring sheets and letter sheets (pictured to the right) are available in the Faith Formation Office for you to copy for your classes.

2.) Collect canned or boxed goods for the Hilliard Food Pantry: The Food Pantry is in need of many items- spaghetti sauce, muffin mixes, tuna, canned pasta, peanut butter, canned meats, ramen noodles, soups, tomato sauce, canned veggies, oatmeal, rice, toothpaste, shampoo, toilet paper, etc.  Have each child in your class choose one thing they want to bring in to class.  Donations may be dropped off 5454 Franklin St. at Thursday 6-7pm at or drop off any time at the Senior Center, YMCA, library, or police station.

3.) Partner with a local program to put together care packages for those in need.

4.) Invite a parish ministry leader to talk to your class about a ministry that serves those in need. They may also be able to help you come up with an activity your class can do for that ministry  (examples of service ministries in the parish are Kairos prison ministry, St. Vincent De Paul, Respect Life, Habitat for Humanity, Prayer Shawl Ministry). If you wish to contact a particular ministry, please contact the parish office for their contact information.

5.) Have your class prepare a snack or no-bake treat for local service ministry (Kairos prison ministry, Holy Family Soup Kitchen, St. Vincent De Paul etc.). If you are going to be preparing snacks in the classroom, please use ingredients that are easy to clean up. There are other some rooms in the school you can use as well to prepare a snack, just let us know in advance. If you wish to contact a particular ministry, please contact the parish office for their contact information.

6.) Have your class write cards/ letters of appreciation to our Priests (Fr. Bob and Fr. Tom), letting them know how much we are grateful for their service and all they do for our parish community!

7.) Greeting Cards for the Home-bound: Have children create and decorate a greeting card for the sick and disabled to whom communion is brought each week. The cards can be as simple or as “crafty” as you’d like! Children can leave the name blank – all they need to do is write a  kind greeting, letting them know they are in our thoughts and prayers.  For more information about homebound ministry contact Jen Rice.
